The general public is probably more familiar with the term Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), whereas OOS may be more familiar in work and occupational therapy settings. Symptoms tend to occur due to activities with repetitive motions or sustained muscle contraction involving the hands, wrists, arms and shoulders. Commonly known ailments such as Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis), Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis) and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are specific conditions fitting with the RSI definition. Such conditions are easily aggravated and can become debilitating if left to progress. Early intervention is always best, and such conditions are easily treatable with the proper treatment approach. Some conditions have a medical name and a commonly known name, usually named after an activity associated with the condition. Lateral Epicondylitis is more widely known as Tennis Elbow, though one does not have to play tennis to develop symptoms. Many activities involve sustained use of the forearm extensor muscles, like playing tennis. Many professionals such as mechanics, plumbers, electricians, typists, musicians, massage therapists etc. can all be susceptible to tennis elbow. Usually, the condition arises gradually over time due to repetitive microtrauma, though it can occur from a specific injury event. There are many possible causes, preventative strategies and treatment options. The headache market is a multi-billion dollar industry for the pharmaceutical industry. Equally, the consumer has grown accustomed to reaching for over the counter medications such as paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen. However, many such products do not identify the root cause of the headaches and often only mask symptoms. Equally, there is growing evidence of the longer-term effects of prolonged use of such medications and, in some cases, even causing headaches. Headaches can occur for various reasons, levels of severity and differing symptoms. Many types of headaches have a musculoskeletal or myofascial component. It is often possible to reduce the frequency and even severity of such headaches with simple lifestyle changes and hands-on treatment. Trauma caused by falls is a common reason for experiencing hip bursitis symptoms. Often, when people fall, specific contact points hit the floor first, such as hands, elbows, shoulders, and hips. Hence, many areas can get injured during a fall, and hips often take the brunt of many falls. Due to other swelling and pain, symptoms of trochanteric bursitis may not be apparent at the time of injury. Equally, unresolved injuries and habits can result in tissue adaptations and changes in biomechanics, which can also lead to hip bursitis. Such changes can lead to gradual symptom onset with no obvious, apparent cause. The shoulder complex is no doubt the most complicated set of joint structures within the body. Hence, no wonder there is such a wide variety of conditions that impact shoulder mobility. The human body makes various tradeoffs, including mobility over stability. Shoulders are highly mobile yet at the cost of a wide range of joints and supportive structures. Although there are many types of Bursitis, the subacromial bursa of the shoulder is one of the most common. The bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion, which reduces friction between bones and other tissues. Bursae can become inflamed for many reasons, resulting in pain and reduced mobility. It is also easy to further irritate an inflamed bursa, especially in the shoulder. Hence, the condition can easily become chronic if left or if the wrong treatment strategy is applied. Many types of injury can become chronic in that symptoms persist for longer than three months and sometimes years. In most cases, tissues heal as "normal" after trauma, and we are not likely to notice the subtle changes an injury may create. After all, tissue healing is a repair and not new or regenerated tissue, equivalent to the original uninjured tissue. However, the body and other tissues naturally adapt to these changes. Tissues can only correctly heal if they have the right healing environment, including protection from further injury. It is relatively easy for conditions to worsen and become chronic if a healing environment does not exist. Trauma can impact many tissues and structures, and one area can affect others (biotensegrity). Although one area may heal, it may not function as well as it should, affecting the healing of other regions. Although the human body is extremely good at adapting, which aids healing, it does have limits. Such a combination of factors is likely to play a vital part in the initial aspects of developing Chronic Pain. However, Chronic Pain becomes fat more than just Physical Pain over time. Bursae exist throughout the body and near joint structures and cushion or reduce the friction between tissues and structures during movement. There are many reasons why a bursa and the surrounding tissues can become inflamed and painful. Once inflamed, it is easy to irritate tissues further, leading to more inflammation, pain and restricted movement. Besides the hip, Subacromial Bursitis of the shoulder is extremely common. Bursitis can resolve quickly enough with the right MSK treatment strategy, though it can easily become chronic if left. SMR tools work in different ways according to design and how one uses them. One such tool is a massage stick or muscle roller stick. There are limitations on what one can achieve in a self-treatment context, partially due to applying tools. One can get the best results by using the right tool in the proper context and not expecting one tool to do everything. Even a combination of tools will not treat everything due to the limitations mentioned. Just as there are many forms of myofascial release (MFR), there is a huge variety of myofascial release tools on the market. As with most tools, each tool has a specific purpose by design. Equally, it is possible to use particular tools in different ways to achieve different intended outcomes. Professionals using soft-tissue therapy techniques, including (MFR) have historically used specific parts of the body to perform techniques on patients/clients. The development of many SMR tools came about by professionals looking to reduce loads and wear and tear on their bodies. However, the market for such tools within the professional therapist field is relatively small compared to the entire population. Hence, it is essential to understand the origins of such tools and the knowledge base behind their use and application. As with any form of soft-tissue therapy, there are occasions where it may not be safe (contraindicated) to use a particular treatment method at all. Equally, it may not be safe to use some techniques on certain parts of the body. Unfortunately, social media is full of people using various SMR tools and techniques with a distinct lack of anatomy knowledge or even a basic understanding of such methods' principles. The following article discusses specific MFR tools and techniques for treating the legs, essentially different tools for different jobs.

<i style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">Article written by Terry Davis MChiro, <i style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">BSc (Hons), <i style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">Adv. Even seemingly minor ankle injuries can have an impact on proprioception (a kind of human GPS). The human GPS has particular relevance to the placement of the foot and ankle when walking or more involved activities like running and jumping. As the ankles are weight-bearing joints, how the foot plants when moving is critical to injury avoidance and sure footing. Ankle injuries can effectively mean that the human GPS needs recalibrating post-injury. Proprioceptive ankle rehabilitation is a good way of recalibrating the human GPS. However, before embarking on any form of self-treatment or rehabilitation, one should seek professional guidance in the first instance. There are occasions where it may not be safe or contraindicated for one to embark on self-treatment, and equally, there may be underlying issues that require treatment first. The full article on proprioceptive rehabilitation goes into far more detail. Proprioceptive ankle rehab with a wobble/balance board

<i style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">Article written by Terry Davis MChiro, <i style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">BSc (Hons), <i style="font-family: times, "times new roman", serif;">Adv. There is a vast area of therapists working within the musculoskeletal field of health, often with vastly differing training, education and experience. Although areas of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) field are regulated, and professional associations offer a form of voluntary regulation, virtually anybody can set themselves up to work with the general public. The author has worked in the Musculoskeletal (MSK) health sector for over fifteen years and is aware of some unethical and dubious practices at play within the field. Some of those practices have related to individuals operating within regulated areas, under voluntary regulation or practitioners with no form of regulation.

The author wrote this article for several reasons and in part to help patients make better-informed decisions regarding the behaviours, characteristics, training and education that one should expect from a good vs bad therapist/practitioner. Equally, the author has often had patients ask who would be the best person for one of their friends or relatives to see due to geographical constraints. Furthermore, similar questions frequently appear on the various forums that the author contributes. Stress is a factor of everyday life, yet a crisis such as the current Coronavirus Covid-19 situation brings with it a whole new magnitude of change. The unprecedented level of change, uncertainty and fear all increase physiological and psychological stress levels. Our ability to cope with such stresses, both short and long term is often called resilience. People deemed as resilient appear to have a combination of behaviours and characteristics in common. This commonality between these individuals helps explain why they may appear to or even cope better than others in times of prolonged stress. The full article looks at resilience in more detail and what we all can learn from these resilient people. The article is just one of a group of articles the author has called the (#homesurvivalpack). The aim is to help people cope with working from home and with other challenges the lockdown brings. Resilience in the face of adversity, uncertainty and the covid-19 situation

Although life may seem somewhat chaotic and uncertain at present, the situation will improve. The current Coronavirus Covid-19 situation means that everybody has to make often dramatic changes to every aspect of daily life. A large proportion of the population is now working from home, which even in normal circumstances can create its own set of challenges. Such challenges combined with all of the other uncertainty and changes to routine can all be “stressors”. Stress creates both physiological and psychological changes within the body and the last thing anybody needs is the additional stress associated with musculoskeletal pain. Luckily, it is relatively easy to help avoid or limit the impacts of musculoskeletal pain due to an incorrect home-computer setup. The home-working computer setup survival guide explains an easy six-step process for creating an ergonomic working space at home. There are also details covering the importance of routine, techniques to separate work and home life. The article offers insights into stress, coping strategies and resilience. Things will get back to some form of normality sooner, rather than later provided people stay-safe and follow reputable advice. Equally, it is worth remembering that each of our actions can have severe ramifications for self and others. However, there would appear to be increased incidences of Neck Pain, which appear to be partially attributable to our modern way of life. Terms such as “Text Neck” have also become popular, and the press has regular articles about smart devices and increasing incidences of neck-related pain. Admittedly, modern-day living for many people involves significant amounts of time using smart devices and minimal movement. Equally, neck pain can often coincide with shoulder pain, upper back pain and even tension or migraine-type headaches. The article “Neck Pain - a Myotherapy perspective” explains strategies to help avoid or limit the occurrences of neck pain and more.
Episodes of back pain can vary, as can severity and possible cause. The human spine consists of a highly complicated combination of joint structures and soft-tissues. Pain-free and unrestricted mobility relies on each section of the spine, being able to move or function correctly. Overall movement within the spine relies on "coupled-motion", and each section has a direct impact on others within the spinal column. A restriction in one segment will impact segments above and below (see Biotensegrity article), which may or may not result in pain or aching. Although many people may not realise it, injuries and tissue healing have more relevance than just at the time of injury. Injuries, tend to create pain, which in turn the affects how one moves at the time of injury. In essence, our bodies adapt to allow us to move in a way that tries to avoid pain and yet enables us to survive. Such movement adaptions become learnt at the time of injury, during the healing phase and often long after healing has finished, effectively becoming normalised. Furthermore, when soft-tissues heal the process results in scar tissue, which is very different to the original tissue. The combination of adaptations and scar tissue can create changes in loads (biotensegrity) on other structures within the body. Unresolved trauma and changes in biotensegrity can frequently lead to other seemingly unrelated injuries sometimes years later. <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Tissue adaptation is highly relevant to injury prevention, training, performance, injury rehabilitation and general musculoskeletal health. Tissues and structures within the body have different types of properties, based on function. The musculoskeletal system adapts to applied forces and as is tolerable. Equally, tissues and structures respond differently according to the types of force involved, speed of force, duration of force, the direction of force and more. Adaptations also have relevance for Biotensegrity and tissue healing. The human body consists of a combination of parts, structures, joints and soft-tissues, which enable us to move amongst other things. One should view the body as a single or whole structure as everything grew via mitosis (cell division). Structures and tissues within the body have different material properties such as elasticity, strength and more. Our bodies maintain and change shape through a combination of compressive and tensional forces within (Biotensegrity). Loads or forces within the body are continually changing according to the requirements placed on the body. Many people seem to forget that our limbs are relatively heavy and our bodies deal with the force of gravity 24/7. Equally, biotensegrity can change due to injuries (trauma), or tissue adaptations. Most of us will have twisted our ankle at some point in life and to varying degrees of severity and probably thought nothing of it. The chances are that most people will have never even sought any form of treatment after the ankle injury either, except in the most severe cases. However, even relatively minor injuries can create adaptive changes to our mechanics and the way we move. Such changes, can frequently lead to other issues at a later date, be it weeks, months or years later. There are many possible causes of Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS), which sometimes referred to as Runner’s Knee. As with Patellofemoral Syndrome, runners can frequently experience ITB syndrome, and although both conditions are known as Runner’s Knee though they have subtle differences. Equally, ITB related problems can also cause hip-related pain or symptoms and so the term Runner’s knee is not necessarily entirely accurate. If one looks at the mechanics of running and the ITB, it is reasonably easy to see why runners may have a higher incidence of this particular condition. However, as with other Musculoskeletal related conditions, just because the condition is called Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS), does not mean the ITB is the cause. Such pain may occur after an obvious trauma such as a fall or develop gradually and over time. Equally, people participating in certain types of sports may have a higher incidence of specific types of knee pain, as is often the case with Patellofemoral Syndrome. Patellofemoral Syndrome is also commonly referred to as Runner’s Knee or Rower’s Knee, though even sedentary people can suffer from this type of knee pain. The biomechanics involved in both Running and Rowing both place additional loads on the Patella and knee joint complex. Equally, both of these activities are very repetitive, meaning that tissues and joint structures can quickly become irritated if something is not quite right somewhere in the body.
